I started my career
driving a school bus.

I taught science at an elementary school in a rural community in Washington State, where I designed hands-on, project-based curriculum. This formative experience continues to shape my commitment to employing strategic communications to reach policymakers and practitioners like the teacher I once was.

My Story

After teaching, I worked as a researcher and communicator at some of the country's most rigorous research and policy institutions including the American Institutes for Research, Abt Associates, the University of Chicago Crime Lab and Education Lab. My focus was bridging research, policy, and practice with strategic communications.

I have led high-performing teams, shaped narratives on social and economic policy, and managed national campaigns that amplify evidence-based solutions to our country's greatest challenges.

I served as Director of Public Affairs at the University of Chicago Crime Lab and Education Lab, where I established the organization's first public affairs team and led strategic communications, media relations, and external positioning.

I spearheaded a full brand refresh, launched new websites and digital channels, and developed multi-channel campaigns that significantly increased our reaching and influence, including doubling website traffic and delivering a campaign that reached nearly 140,000 viewers.

What Drives Me Now

In 2025, I launched Sarah Rand Strategies to partner with organizations to tell bold stories that spark action, build trust, and drive systemic change. I believe every mission-driven organization deserves a powerful voice in a world that's constantly evolving.

I bring steadiness in chaos, clarity in complexity, and the passion to elevate organizations' stories. I partner with organizations to grow their reach, influence, and impact. When you work with me, you'll feel supported to do big things.

Beyond the Work

I live in Evanston, Illinois, with my husband David (who also consults independently) and our two boys. I'm a cyclist, a runner, a traveler, a baker, and a mediocre chess player (my son beats me regularly).

I got into this work because I wanted to do good in the world. That shows up in how I serve my clients, how I show up for my community, and how I spend my time outside of work. Creative, curious, and purpose-driven, I aim to drive meaningful change in life and work.

About the Brand

The Sarah Rand Strategies mark is a geometric floral built from speech-bubble-shaped petals, which are flame-shaped when turned sideways. The overlapping petals represent dialogue, connection, and the meeting of ideas. The colors are warm and bold, with the red reflecting the fire that burns within and a nod to my red hair.

This business is dedicated to the strong women in my family who came before me. Some who realized their professional potential. Some who never got the chance.
